Last night during the final spectacular performance of 'Kabaret Of Dreams' the Casts new season productions were announced. The new shows were a closely guarded secret and the team resisted all efforts by the current cast to reveal the shows in advance.
December will see the Phoenix transformed to 1920's Hollywood as we celebrate the bygone age of classic cinema with the musical romantic comedy. The 1952 film starred Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen and Debbie Reynolds in iconic musical performances. In fact many critics regard it as the best film musical ever made and is ranked as the fifth greatest motion picture of all time. It tells the story of three Silent film actors who have to transition and adapt to the New style of 'Talkies' and includes classic musical numbers including Make 'em laugh, You were Meant for me, Moses Supposes, Good Morning and of course Singin' in the rain.
Technical challenges include the filming of a section of silent movie, car rides and of course a certain song involving an umbrella, lampost and a large amount of falling water...
Hot on the heels of Singin in the rain the cast then head a short historical jump to 1960's Baltimore where the songs are poppin, the dancers grooving and the hair is... well big, which means lots of HAIRSPRAY. The news about the show was delivered by Award winning performer and former broadway HAIRSPRAY cast member Judine Sommerville who recorded a special message for the cast. Judine who is currently teaching Theatre Dance at the Ailey School in New York took time out of her busy schedule to record the message after working with the Cast at a special workshop during their recent New York trip.
Hairspray is the winner of 8 Tony Awards and was made into a successful film version of the musical in 2007. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on her favourite Tv show - The Corny Collins Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colourful group of characters, leading to social change as Tracy campaigns for the shows integration.
With a hop full of catchy pop songs including - Good Morning Baltimore, Mama I'm a big girl now, Welcome to the 60's and the stand out number, You Can't Stop The Beat.
While that would be ample for most performing arts courses the cast will also be performing 2 all new Kabarets in October and June.
Tickets for all of the casts new shows will be on sale soon!
